Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. The series is based on George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. The series takes place on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos and chronicles the power struggles among noble families as they fight for control of the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. The series has been praised for its acting, complex characters, story, scope, and production values, although it has also been criticized for its gratuitous violence and nudity.
The beginning
The show’s protagonists are members of several powerful families—Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Targaryen, and Tyrell—in Westeros. As the series opens, additional threats emerge in the icy North and in the eastern continent of Essos. Most of the story arcs center on a dynastic conflict among competing claimants for the throne of the Seven Kingdoms, with other noble families fighting for independence from it: the Starks, who rule as Wardens of the North; the Lannisters, hereditary rulers of the Westerlands; Baratheons, ruling Storm’s End and several lesser holdings; Greyjoys, who rule Iron Islands; and Targaryens, who fled to Dragonstone when House Targaryen was ousted from power.

The series was filmed in Belfast and elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. The series debuted on HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011, and its seventh season ended on August 27, 2017. The series will conclude with its eighth season, which will consist of six episodes and is scheduled to air in 2019.
